Hare Today ...

16 August 2018 | Croker Bay
Janice
A glorious day, no wind and sunshine. The bay froze overnight (very thin ice); . The super motor yacht (in our last post we said it was called Bo III but it is actually Ice Angel) left about 10 pm last night and returned at 8 am today having tried to get out to Lancaster Sound (18nm from here) but failed having encountered 5/10 ths ice in the entrance to Croker Bay. This is seen in the ice chart, showing the heavier ice blocking the entrance. The next bay West Cummings Inlet had 6 boats in it however 4 escaped this afternoon due to heavy ice ingressing and threatening to trap them, two heading for Arctic Bay.

We had an excellent two hour walk ashore in search of Musk Ox but all we found was a beautiful Arctic Hare. We managed to get quite close to it before it casually hopped away.

Returning to the boat we finished making fresh bread, ate cheese and crackers in the cockpit while downing cups of tea in the afternoon sunshine. Vegetable curry, dahl and rich for dinner.

So far no worries about the encroaching ice, the fjord has perhaps 1/10 ice cover but the bay we are in seems to have enough outflow from the river to stay mostly ice free. So we are stuck in this location, not stuck in the ice, we need some West wind (not forecast) to clear the coast.
