Electrical Engineering and Scabies

29 July 2010 | Asanvari Bay, South Maewo Island
John and Shauna
Still in Asanvari, Mike Brown and John spent the next day trying to repair the water-powered generator at the waterfall that the village uses to power a few light globes in the yacht club and the Nakamal, and a couple of power sockets (which mainly seem to be used for charging the mobile phones). It has only been producing power at anything from 100 to 160 volts, which we diagnosed as being due to a leak to earth from the copper winding in the generator. This will need either rewinding or a replacement assembly, and we have sent an e-mail to the makers to try to facilitate this. At 100 to 160 volts, it is still enough to charge the phones and make the compact fluorescent lights work, but nothing more power-hungry, and in any case in time it will fail unless the repair is made. We had a couple of visits with the nurse at the Dispensary here - Olivet - and we'll put up a separate blog post about her, the clinic and the load of infectious disease there, and what we managed to do for her, sometime soon. There's quite a lot to tell. Independence Day is approaching (three days away now) so the villagers are paying less attention to us and more to their preparations - string band rehearsals, Kastom dance practice and choir rehearsals. We will probably up anchor tomorrow and make for Lolowai on Ambae Island - another dozen miles downwind - where there is a big show planned for Independence. The entrance there is very shoal, and we will need to be there at full high tide - either very early in the day or just near sunset, at present. We let you know how that one works out! Sorry about the lack of new pics, but we're not in internet land for a while yet. Cheers from us.
