Happy as Clams

John and Shauna
Friday morning we finally cast off the concrete deck shoes and said goodbye to Port Moselle. We had a really nice and speedy sail down to Boise, a broad and sheltered bay with a narrow, reef-guarded entrance. It is used as an overnight rest stop by the Noumea pilots - they were there waiting for a ship to call them from outside the pass as we pulled in. We came down in company with Alan and his family on "Sea Fever". Coming down Havannah Passage on our way to the anchorage we had a strike on our lure and John pulled in a pretty decent sized Yellowfin tuna, some of which went into a fish curry that night. Starting the next morning at a sensible 08:00 we exited the pass on an ebbing tide with no turbulence and set course for Tanna. We anticipated the wind moving Easterly so we made a more Easterly course than the rhum line, and needed only minimal motoring to clear Yanuwao Point by 3 miles, then had a beam reach to Yewao Point, from where we turned into Port Resolution Bay - a bit rolly but very secure except in strong NE through NW. One Aussie yacht in here already and a Swiss boat that is pushing on this afternoon. We are expecting only light winds and swell for a couple of days so it looks likely to be comfortable enough. "Sea Fever" are a few hours behind us and should be here by lunchtime (it's 08:00 here as we write - two days journey exactly). Tomorrow we will get a lift in the truck over the central mountain range of Tanna and do our check-in at the government offices in Lenakel. The truck passes right under one side of the active volcano Yasur, over its ash plain, and this is a spectacular journey. We could see the hot red glow of Yasur as we came along the coast in the wee hours this morning, as it fluctuated in its activity from minute to minute. It looks very active at present. There is a big ash cloud rising over the hill on the West side of the anchorage, and a fine dusting of ash settles on any flat surface in an hour or so - we have to keep laptopns, cameras and the like closed and in a cover. Wednesday we will head up to the clinic and see what we can do to help, and we have some school supplies as well. Matt and Jane are meeting us in Port Vila next week so we will have a bit of time to spend here as long as the swell doesn't get too heavy. (Shauna once got sea-sick at anchor here, such is the roll when the swell outside is running and refracts into the bay!). Cheers from us.
