More Lifou
19 June 2008 | We Marina
John and Shauna
We are nearing the end of our stay here in Lifou. The conditions in We Harbour are terrific - the marina while small has been very comfortable. The people of Lifou, who call themselves "Drehu" are very proud of their culture and way of life. They, like the other Loyalty Islanders, have a kind of semi-autonomous setup which leaves most important decisions and administrative matters in local hands. You don't see any French flags, and in fact some places fly the Kanaky flag instead. The young people are on the whole happy and we are told there is virtually no drug use on the island, although booze seems to be a bit of a problem, but not associated at all with violence.
Tomorrow (Saturday) we hope to leave for Tanna, an island of Vanuatu. We'll send a post from there.
