Larry
Greetings for La Paz. Look at these triple D papyas I found today. All natural, firm and no silicon. By the way the triple D is for D-D-Delisios!!! What did you think it stood for? La Paz is a wonderful town. It has a population of about 250,000 but you would never know it was that big. We are anchored out in the bay as the Marina De La Paz was full with other Baja boats and took the dingy into the marina where we can use all the facilities for 15 pesos a day of a little over 1 dolar. Here is how special this place is; today we reprovisioned Diamond Girl and we had no idea where to shop so we decided to go to one of the big box stores as we needed a variety of of items other than food. Before we found a cab we gave our propane tank to a gentleman at the marina and he said he would have it filled and back to us at 1 PM. We dropped off all ourt towels and bed sheets to the laundry and the lady there said she would have them done by 1 PM also. We then found a cab sitting right out side the marina office. He said it was 70 pesos or about $5 for a trip to the store which was about 10 miles away. When we got there he asked if we wanted him to wait? We told hi m we would be a while and he didn't need to wait for us. He said it wasn't a problem and refused to take our money insisting we pay him when he took us back to the marina. The shopping experience is hard to explain. Everything is about celebrating Chrismas down here. The shelves are stocked with Chrismas merchandise and the Chrismas music is on the sound system. Right in the middle of the spanish Christmas songs comes the rock song Whitchy Woman in english. Now we didn't find anyone in the store that spoke english but they like the music. You can see the papya we bought for 49 pesos or $3.76. It will take us four days to eat this and it is wonderful! The ony thing we needed and couldn't identify was half and half or cream for Nelda's morning coffee. Not too bad for shopping by looking a pictures. We spent about 2 hours in the store and end up with a cart full of food and other items when Nelda has a man come up behind her and tap her on the shoulder. It is Rafael, our cab driver. He said he was worried about us. She told him we were just about to check out and we would meet him outside. Amazingly he follows us to the checkout counter and proceeeded to help bag our purchases! The food here is very affordable. Very nice ribeye steaks were $4.50 each. Rafael helped us to the car and loaded our groceries in the back of his van. He drove us back to the marina and helped us to our dingy with everything. Now he asked us for 140 pesos for the last 3 hours of his time and gas. That is a little over $10. We gave him a $20 bill and he was embarised he couldn't make change. We told him we didn't want change and he thanked us over and over again. It was time to pick up the laundry and it was clean and folded and sealed in a plastic see though bag. All for 130 pesos or $10. Nelda would have used more than that in quarters to wash and dry two big loads and talk about great marketing!!! We had 3 other Ha Ha couples asked us where we got it done? We picked up the propane and were off to the boat to restock the shelves. We do have one major complaint about Mexican grocery stores. Nelda and I have developed a Cheetos addiction. We eat a bag every day or two. All was well until we ran out in Cabo. Nelda bought a giant bag of Cheetos there and when we started eating them they were terrible. It looked like a Cheetos bag but it had the word Folecia in bold letters. Well we are not sure what that means but it coud be another word for bad. I mean we really tried to like these things but it was impossible. Finale we gave up. On the way back up the coast to La Paz we had sea gulls following the boat and I like seeing them eat so I started throwing out these Cheetos. They would swoop down and grab one, hold it in their beat and then drop it. And they never tried twice. Even the rats of the air wouldn't eat these hidious things. The really bad new is that the regular Cheetos don't exist in Mexico, so Nelda and I are in withdrawl! We just keep licking our fingers. That's it for tonight, tomorrow it is off to find a bank and to a marine supply store.
