Enough is Enough

06 December 2011 | 24 09'N:110 19'W, "Coata Baja Marina..." La Paz
Larry
The wind his really been blowing here today and is forecast for it to increase significantly over the next few days. I found todays photo posted in a marine store. No, this is not Diamond Girl and no it is not this bad in the anchorage but it is a great photo. Interesting the boat looks very similar to one that our friends sail in Canada. Just as intersting is the person at the helm looks allot like Glenn. Notice that he seems to be the only person on the boat, well this makes sense as Michelle is below cooking some fabulous meal. Back to our anchorage, well today it is our former anchorage as yesterday we moved into a marina. Nelda snd I had endured two days and nights of high winds and waves and with the a forecast of winds increasing to nere gale or gale levels to day and tomorrow we just didn't want to take it anymore. We had been achored about a quarter mile from the Marina de La Paz but with the weather no one wanted to leave so there were no slips available. To get to there we had to launch the dingy which was a death defying feat in these winds and then slog our way to the dingy dock in the marina. That was the easy part. Coming back we were going against the breacing waves so were soaked by the time we got back to Diamond Girl. Add to that the ever present danger of other boats draging anchor and running into us and we weren't sleeping well at all. So we took a cab to explore options at other marinas. We finailly located a slip at and marina that really could use our help. It was relatively ne w but was almost empty. It is located about 4 moles out side La Paz at the entrance to the channel. As Nelda and I always have a soft spot for people or businesses in need of our support we decieded that we could take a $5 cab ride to and from town and we would suport this you fledgling marina. I probabley should let you know that the "Coast Baja Marina" is only part of the name, the rest is "Resort and Spa". Yes it is true that we have have converted to the dark side of cruising. After nothing but boat showers for over 4 weeks a real shower sounded really good as did food we didn't cook ourselves. Oh yea, the pools and hot tub are nice and the sauna and the bar by the pool but someone has to help these people so we will suffer through it. The marina is bery interesting, it is cut out of solid rock and has been under construction for 3 years. As we were coming in I was watching our GPS chart and it showed us crossing land for about a half mile. Our slip is in an area that ha s no exposure to any wind except what we can hear blowing above us. Apparently it was built as a high end destination resort and it was a little too high end for the economic conditions. We were plesantly surprised to find the moorage rate to be less than The Marina de La Paz. It is $24 US per night or about $700 per month. We aren't staying for a month but it is going to take a while to get tired of the showers and the pool. We are going take a few weeks to get Diamond Girl ready to cross to the mainland and somewhere warm. It is in the midde 50's here today and that is just too cold. Nelda is in town shopping today and I am doing projects. Tomorrow or the next day or the next day we are going to start purging the boat of the stuff we ar not using. We have 25% more stuff than palces to put it so something has to go. It's about lunch time here so I need to warm up the two hot dogs Nelda took out of the freezer for me, or I guess I could go exploring and check out one of the resturaunts at the resort, hum, what to do?
