One of the first things youu notice as you approach Isla Isabella is the cloud of birds around the island. There are more birds here than any place Nelda and I have ever been. There are two primary types, frigate birds and boobie birds. There are the occational pelecans and gulls but they are the minority. Todays photo is of a male frigate displaying his colors. I was standing about two feet away when I took this picture. The birds are everywhere. The frigate birds nest in trees about head high and there will be up to a dozen nests in one small tree, while the boobies nest on the ground. You have to be very carefull where you step as there are boobie nests everywhere. The frigate birds and boobies have an interesting relationship. The boobies are great at catching fish and the frigate birds are the masters of the air with there long wings. When a boobie has eatten all the fish it can carry and is flying back to the island the firgate birds force it into the sea. If the boobie doesn't go down easily, the frigate bird will grab the boobies feet and it will crash into the sea. The boobie trys to take off and the same thing happens over and over again until the boobie coughs up its craw full of fish and the frigate birds swoop in for a free meal. The boobie is then free to fly away and goes fisshing again. No one seems to get hurt during this whole process but it is really interesting to watch. More on boobies in the next post.
