Exumas

19 December 2013 | Big Majors spot
Dick
We left Great Harbor Cay Marina on Sunday Dec. 15th. Our route took us SW until we could go on a course south of the Berrys and on down through the Tongue of the Ocean and west of New Providence straight to the Exumas. We encountered other boats that were headed to Nassau but it seemed like our crossing to the Berrys from Florida that no one else was taking this route. We wanted to do more fishing but we were on the deep water mostly during the night time and chose not to fish at night. It was a nearly full moon so the visibility was very good. The winds were light and it was a pleasant sail through the night but the wind did not hold during the day Tuesday. In fact there was no wind and as we motored at times the water was like glass and you could not see the difference between the color of the flat water on the horizon and the sky. As we had gotten closer to the Exuma chain we began to see many other boats that had taken advantage of the good weather making their way down the from the east side of New Providence. All and all it was a good trip and we arrived at Shroud Cay after 29 hours tired and hot so we immediately jumped in the water for a swim, which was very refreshing!
The next morning we headed down the chain to where we are now, anchored at Big Majors Spot. We may stay here during Christmas and New Years. We would like to stay for the races on New Years so we can crew on one of the traditional Bahamian boats. We did that last year and it was a lot of fun.
Nancy has started her routine of making bread every couple of days, since availability is not an easy thing in this part of the Bahamas. The local women bake bread and the coconut bread is particularly good, but the price is about $6 a loaf! Ryan, she has started making her own multi-grain that you would be proud of!
