Motor sailing
19 December 2014 | south of New Providence
Today (Dec.13) we are heading to Shorud Cay in the Exumas. We are traveling on The White Banks in about 25 feet of water motor sailing with just enough wind to fill the sails but not enough to move the boat so we run at a low RPM. The flat water makes for a very comfortable ride. It will take us around 8 hours to make the trip so it gives us a lot of time on our hands. Lately we have found it difficult to find time to update this blog so maybe this will work and in few days we can upload it.
After leaving Lucaya we made a day trip to an anchorage on the north tip of the Berry Islands, very near a spot where many of the cruise ships anchor and let the passengers make a stop on the beach. In the morning we headed to another anchorage near Devil's Cay, where we stayed for four days. Barry and Susan on Night Hawk had caught a mahi on the way over and shared it with us the first night. Susan makes some killer fish tacos! On the second night we had lobster on the grill. We ate the two largest lobsters we caught that day and froze a couple others. The next night we had cracked conch and lobster dip for appetizers at sunset. We were able to do some hiking and beach walking too so we had a chance to burn off a few of the calories.
It had been a good visit but we decided it was time to head south. We left the Berrys and headed for New Providence (Nassau). Night Hawk need to stop in Nassau for a part so they headed there and we went to a nearby anchorage at Rose lsland. At that anchorage we had a few minutes to visit with Bruce and Val on Windrush, who we have met up with on previous years. We had been told they were anchored there for a few days. The next morning, today, we headed for the Exumas and see Night Hawk heading on a similar course. We will both anchor at Shroud Cay, which is in Exuma Park, this evening and will spend a little time hiking and dinghying the creeks tomorrow. No more fishing until we are out of the Park.
