Soon it was time to catch our bus and head to Varadaro. The bus ride was tough, a leaky air conditioner on the roof and cockroaches on the floor and walls when it got dark. Soon after the ride Nancy came down with a something that stuck with her for about a week.
We arrived in Boca de Camarioca after dark and Leo's friend and wife were waiting for us in front of Leo's house. We had met Jorge before but I did not really remember him, yet he and his wife, Pupy, greeted us like we were old friends. They had only been renting rooms in their home for less than a year. We stayed at their place for 6 nights but we had been away one night and even though we keep our things in our rooms while we were gone, they refused to charge us for it. They call their place Casa Jorge Y Pupy and they had two rooms made up for us. On the roof of the home they had a large area with seating, screening for the direct sun, and a view of the city. It was only a short walk for a few blocks and crossing a bridge to a small park for WiFi. A walk to the beach was similar.
The baths and showers in our rooms were all ceramic and immaculate. Pupy and Jorge made us breakfast or dinner, whenever we wanted. Breakfast was 5 CUC and dinner around 10 unless it was lobster which they wanted a little more. Great care was taken to serve the meals as if we were in a fine restaurant. Pupy is a wonderful gourmet cook, and the two of them were perfect hosts. One evening Pupy made us paella from a Jorge family Spanish recipe. They anticipated our every need and helped with arrangements when we needed anything! We told them that they had treated us better than family!
