The Anchor

Benno
Our main anchor is the original roll-bar anchor, called: Buegel anchor and it weighs 80 lbs (37 kg) and was shipped to Canada in 2004 from Germany. (http://www.toplicht.de/shop/anker-und-ketten/anker/buegelanker) The designer Rolf Kaczirek indicated to us, this Lloyd approofed anchor is manufactured in Gdansk, Poland to his specifications. The 80 lbs anchor fit nicely our 16 ton Diesel Duck. The saying is, "Rather bigger than too small." Hauling up the anchor, a back breaking exercise, is done easily with the windlass. We do understand there is only the stainless steel version of the original Buegel anchor, called WASI anchor on the North American market. A similar type of anchor called Manson Supreme is, in our opinion, very close to the German original version. The Manson Supreme is Lloyd of London registered, made in New Zealand and ranges from 5 - 225 lb. It can be purchased by West Marine (www.westmarine.com) or Defender (www.defender.com). This would be our first choice, if we were not able to purchase the original galvanized version of the German roll-bar anchor. Our second choice goes to the Rocna anchor, another well made anchor of similar design, this anchor is manufactured in China. Coincidently, we met the Rocna designer, Peter Smith, down at Cape Horn in Puerto Williams and Ushuaia and we had some fierce discussions. He was field testing his product using his good looking, large, aluminum sailboat "Kiwi Roa"
