Foleux to Redon Log
Early start to catch the 9.30am (first opening) of the Cran swing bridge. The day started out misty but lifted by mid-afternoon.
Observing even more trees, bushes and open fields either side of us we followed the river spotting several herons, many more of those fishing boats with cranes on, another otter and few more cormorants. We arrived at the Cran swing bridge 20 minutes earlier than planned so anchored and waited until 9.30am. The bridge opened promptly, letting out vessels from the
other side before allowing us access. We waved to the man in the tower to say 'thank you'.
It's really strange to see the equivalent of traffic road signs on the water. Maximum speed signs, no anchoring signs, keep left, keep right and signs with town names on with arrows showing the direction to travel.
As we neared the Port at Redon, we could see from the distance a really narrow channel and a barge moored against the channel wall closing the gap significantly. We wondered if there was actually room for us to go though so we approached slowly and figured that it would be close and that we may have to walk Drummer through the gap. With fenders on both sides and only a foot to spare either side we squeezed through. The Frenchman on the barge just smiled on. Having come out the other side unscathed the mooring up on the visitor's pontoon was a synch!
Arrived early afternoon and couldn't help but notice how humid it's gone.
Travelling up river from Foleux to Redon has given us an insight as to what it would be like to travel on the canals on our return from the Med ... we are not sure if we would get bored very quickly as the scenery is unlikely to change for many miles let alone listening to the constant noise from the engine - we would definitely have to soundproof it beforehand.
Total distance this season: 490.47 nautical miles
