day trip to Palma
Palma didn't disappoint even though it was heaving with tourists as we all headed in the same direction - the Cathedral which dominates the waterfront and the Palau de E'Almudaina (The Palace) next door. The Cathedral is magnificent and impressive from any angle but best viewed from the waterside esplanade where there are many temporary stalls offering to paint your portrait as a cartoon caricature, make necklaces out of wire or have your photo taken with a lady dressed in traditional Spanish costume. If time is at a premium there are horse and carriages, city tour bus or taxis' available to take you on guided tours of the city.
Having admired the shear grandeur of the Cathedral we walked the old town which starts from directly behind the Cathedral. This part of town is much quieter but equally impressive with narrow alleys that are barely wide enough for horse and carriages to travel down.

The narrow alleys generate a slight breeze which we certainly appreciated - it was pretty hot! In our opinion, Old-town Palma compares with Seville with grand buildings, many courtyards, plazas and tree lined promenades providing shade - it's lovely.
cafe/bar courtyard
Before catching the return bus back to Andraixt we had a brief walk along part of the waterfront. Palma has nine marinas and together they hold the largest volume of yachts and motor yachts in Europe - we thought La Rochelle was large but it just doesn't compare! Yacht sizes vary considerably from more modest sizes right the way through to super-sized. It's an amazing sight. There happens to be a race on over the next few days 'The SuperYacht Cup'. Yacht entries vary from a mere 24m through to 45m! Race highlights can be found on the website www.thesuperyachtcup.com
'Atalante', only 39m long!
