A dark dense cloud hovered above Civitavecchia for several hours today. It wasn't due to the weather but due to a forest fire. The wind accelerated the spread of it and it didn't take long before it started to take hold, resulting in the arrival of a seaplane which flew right over the marina before heading towards the fire.
A little while later we heard and saw it again. This time it disappeared over the breakwater to scoop up water before flying over and into the dense cloud. A few seconds later it reappeared from the smoke, gained height and returned over to us to scoop more water. This same routine continued for several hours until finally the seaplane won and the fire was doused. The smoke was being blown out to sea but still some ash rained down as far as the marina.
Despite it's small size, the seaplane is a remarkable invention and fantastic to watch!
The fire made headline news 'Italy's news in English'.
Unfortunately this wasn't the only one as hundreds of hectares of land have been destroyed over the past week, sadly the majority of the fires are believed to be the work of arsonists!
