Vibo Valentia to Tropea log
Another frustrating day spent motoring into very light winds that followed the coast. There was a moment when it shifted and increased slightly but by the time we unfurled the sails it shifted back again. At least the visibility was excellent as we spotted in the distance two of the seven Aeolian Islands, that of Stromboli and Panarea barely 30 miles away.
As Tropea approached we noted a discrepancy of 20m between the charted depth and the actual depth, the actual depth being far more shallow! Thankfully the entrance was clearly buoyed and depths remained constant at 4m right up to the berth so it didn't present us with any issues.
The marina and harbour is well established with various travel lifts and shipyard services. Chartering is big business here for Sunsail, Sailitalia and Moorings. Several tripper boats also depart daily to the Aeolian Islands, totally crammed with tourists. We planned to take Flirtie over to the islands after visiting Tropea but have now decided to give the islands a miss and save them for another season. We like to think that an early season visit would be better so as to avoid so many tourists. Our thoughts were reconfirmed after a British couple returned back having spent the day on the ferry visiting the islands. They too were planning on sailing over but a fellow cruiser recommended taking the ferry instead.
Total distance this season: 912.06 nautical miles
