Kastos Island, 'Wasp bay'
an old Greek windmill, repurposed to be a bar
From Ithaka we headed approximately 6 miles north east towards the island of Atokos, located almost in the middle of the Inland sea. We had initially planned to anchor on the south east side in an anchorage named 'one house bay'. A part of us thought that given its location it may be less frequented by yachts but unfortunately as it came into view we couldn't believe how crowded it was so we continued on by.
over 20 yachts anchored in 'one house bay' on the south east side of the island of Atokos
Instead we decided to head back over to the beautifully unspoilt island of Kastos another 10 miles northeast near the Greek mainland to anchor in 'wasp bay' just south of Kastos village.
'wasp bay' - Flirtie is looking small by comparison to our neighbour!
It was aptly named, wasps were present which no doubt detered many yachts from visiting so the anchorage remained spacious. The occasional wasp joined us when food or drinks were being consumed however they seemed to prefer to visit the yachts moored stern to the rocks - the wafting of towels, swift retriet below deck and occasional scream gave it away so we were spared.
It was possible to walk from the beach to the village or follow the coastline by dinghy and into the small inner harbour that provided shelter for just a few fishing boats and a handful of visiting yachts moored stern to. A few tavernas and bars lined the waters' edge and a dirt path lead us to an old windmill and back towards the anchorage with fantastic views.
looking towards the anchorage just off the village
taking in the breathtaking views with a cafe frappe
Kastos is probably the smallest village and harbour that we have ever visited and it's likely that the goat population exceeds the number of residents on the island. It was ultimately a tranqil and delightful place to have been able to visit and certainly a highlight of our Ionian explorations.
Total distance this season: 707.90 nautical miles
