Greek mainland, Mytikas
a beach side breakfast bar overlooking the Ionian sea towards Kalamos island
The village of Mytikas sits on a flat coastal plain off the mountainous Greek mainland and opposite the island of Kalamos. We had passed it previously a month or so ago and it looked to be a picturesque place. To the west side was a long stretch of beach. The shore had the odd campsite hidden amongst the trees and off the beach many yachts were sat at anchor so naturally it was of interests. It was our next destination given that it was barely 8 miles away from the island of Kastos.
the village of Mytikas from the sea
Part of the anchorage had to be avoided due to submerged cables and pipes that supply water and electric over to the islands of Kalamos and Kastos otherwise we could drop anywhere as the depths were shallow by comparison to many places that we had previously visited. The anchor dug in and held immediately which then took some time to recover upon our departure as it came up as a massive weighty mud ball which tested the windlass yet again!
From the moment we stepped ashore and walked along the streets it felt typical Greek, traditional and unpretentious with dodgy wiring strewn overhead, unfinished buildings with rusty wire foundations through to some questionably iffy landing platforms and a sunken or partially built breakwater, marked only with withy sticks and potentially a danger to vessels.
a typical street
hand painted wall & telegraph poles added a splash of colour and character throughout the village
a small supply cargo ship delivers to nearby Kalamos and Kastos and an iffy landing platform made from pallet boxes
We loved every aspect of it, including the way small vans pulled up along the roadside to sell their produce before they headed across the beach to sell to the nearby campsites and sunbathers ashore sending a dust cloud into the air. Somehow the village has managed to retain it's charm and has yet to succumb to tourism. We didn't want to leave.
Total distance this season: 715.32 nautical miles
