Diva Di's Cruising Adventures

Cruise Statistics

Statistics

I compile these statistics for us, for other cruisers possibly contemplating something similar, and for anyone who might just be curious. I decided make the cut-off for the statistics and expenses one full day after our arrival in Newburyport. One could argue that in our case all the time and expense for winterizing the boat and the travel back home is a direct result of this cruise, but you could also argue that the winterization is a common annual expense for northern boats and the travel is just part of an extended visit of family and friends.

Trip Start - 28 Mar 2015
Trip End - 24 Sep 2015
Duration - 181 days (123 moving days, 58 non-moving days)
Distance Traveled - 4,284 nautical miles (4,927 statute miles)
Average Travel Day - 34.9nm per day when moving (about 4-5 hours)

Engine Hours - 514 (average for both engines)
Generator Hours - 70
Diesel fuel used - 1272 gals (engines), 28 gals (generator - estimated)

Economy - 2.5 gal per hour for the engines, 3.4 nautical miles per gallon (estimated 20% at high cruise speed of 13 kts and 80% at economical cruising speed of 8 kts)

Water used - 1685 gals, 9.3 gals per day (this is an estimate as we cannot accurately gauge how much water we are adding to the tank; it does not include boat washing at marinas)

Locks transited - (I did not keep a special count and I don't have the time to go back and reconstruct the data. It was at least 80)

Waterways - Okeechobee Waterway, Intracoastal Waterway, Hudson River, Erie Canal, Oswego Canal, Lake Ontario, Rideau Canal, Ottawa River, St. Lawrence River, Saguenay River, Gulf of St. Lawrence, Straits of Canso, Bras d'Or Inland Sea, Bay of Fundy, Gulf of Maine (Atlantic Ocean)

Overnights - Marinas (49%), Moorings (9%), Anchored (22%), Free docks (20%)

Expenses - (Canadian converted to US dollars)
Provisions $5,450 (including what we stowed prior to departure), $30 per day
Laundry $69
Fuel $4,316 ($1.00 per nm)
Marinas $4,455
Moorings $478
Fees (canal usage, liquor import tax to CA, etc.) $619
Outside Meals and Entertainment $3,775
Maintenance/Repairs $1,106
Transportation $933
Miscellaneous $670
Grand total - $21,053, $116 per day

Notes on expenses:
I always like to look at cruising expenses in terms of differential cost. Given that you own the boat and need to maintain it in good working order, a lot of the boat maintenance expenses are not really cruising-related expenses. Sometimes boat parts fail from usage, but often they fail with age and lack of use. I elected to count those repair costs incurred during this cruise, but left out repairs I made before we left. It was a new-to-us boat, and she needed a little work.

I keep accurate records of all our expenditures (what a surprise, huh?) and have discovered that even for this relatively luxurious cruise we have just completed, our average total expenses (for the cruise plus all other expenses on the home front) only increase by $1,000 to $1,200 per month. In other words, this 6 month adventure only cost us about $7,000 more than if we had stayed home with the boat at the backyard dock. Add in the cost of winterizing the boat for this particular cruise and that figure will go up several thousand.

To put that in perspective, I believe the average cost for a family of 4 to stay at Disney World for just one week is almost $4,000! Chartering a large boat in the Caribbean for a week and flying down, plus all expenses will run you more than that, so $7,000 for this 6 month trip is pretty amazing.

Plus, a husband and wife getting to spend 24/7 in close proximity at all times - Priceless!
