About:
We have been boating for a little over 40 years. Our boats progressed from a 10 ft sailing dinghy to a Venture 17, American 25, Newport 30 MKIII, to a CT-41 Ketch - all sailboats. Searching for a little more speed and adrenaline,, we bought our first power boat, a 17ft runabout. [...]
Extra:
Our Backyard, a Carver 3607 trawler in Virginia, has been sold to a new adventurer. Dragon's Breath, our CHB-41 in Northern California, has also been sold to someone with wonderful dreams. Our Backyard carried us down the eastern rivers of America, on a voyage of incredible discovery. Alas, she [...]

Technology

Technology. It is the Force by which we base our lives. Our clocks are set by a radio signal coming from a master clock somewhere in Colorado, as it measures the half-life degradation of a tiny speck of uranium. Our cell phones receive a time signal from the internet, as well as the current and predicted [...]

Flat Earth

I received an awful lot of flak from fellow RV group members, when I posted a photo of our rig with the rear leveling jacks fully extended, our rear wheels two inches off the ground, as we sought to compensate for a very uneven slope that served as our last parking spot. You see, the parking brakes are [...]

My Kind of Morning

I barely know the difference between a crow and a chickadee, yet am enthralled by the morning calls of these creatures. It's early, and the sun is just peeking through the trees and fog, about to stake its claim on our little part of the world. After some periods of hard rain yesterday, it looks like [...]

Another Winter's Journey Has Begun

The sweet salty flavor of ranch dip, clinging precariously upon the end of a celery stick reminded one of adolescence. It was a reminder of days gone bye, a staple of parties and get-togethers, the ever-present accompaniment to chips, crackers, cubes of cheese, wine, and the noise of celebration. It [...]

A Break in the Weather

A mighty "Yeowww" followed by a flowing stream of epithets has shaken me out of my dreamy tedium as I am scraping hardened barnacles from the propeller. Looking up, I see my boatyard neighbor walking in circles rubbing his forehead, his dust mask and earmuffs hanging at an odd angle, and his ball cap [...]

Enjoying the Autumn

Sunny 60
It is hard to believe that since we moved back into the motorhome in late August, we have logged over 4000 road miles. Our travels have taken us up the coast of Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware, through Pennsylvania and into New York. We visited Woodstock, Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome, and numerous small towns along the way. Massachussets, New Hampshire, and Maine held trememdous beauty and charm, as we watched the trees begin to lose their summer greens and melt into deep shades of orange, yellow, and red. Maine showed us gorgeous views of coastal bays, islands, marshes, and mountains, as we made our way to the northeast corner of the country. Feasting on lobster rolls and Egg McMuffins, locally made ice cream and Nathan's hot dogs, we eventually found ourselves in New Brunswick, Canada. With Hurrican Matthew unable to make a decision whether to follow the coast north or turn to sea, we made our own decision and turned our eyes to the west.

A last foray into central Maine found us in Millinocket, near the northern terminus of the Appalacian trail at Mt. Katahdin, where tired, hungry, and dirty hikers could find a shower, a meal, and a bed, before returning to the real world. The thought of this hike sparked some ideas into our heads. Perhaps hiking such a trail may be somewhere in our future. Doubtful, but one never knows.

As we headed southwest through New Hampshire and Vermont, the fall colors were in full glory. The covered bridges, streams, and mountains were all breathtaking, leaving us just a bit rueful at the thought of leaving this place. But as the nights got colder and the furnace kicked in, we were reminded that this will be a harsh place in the winter. So we relished the fact that we were there to enjoy and not to stay.

The nice part about traveling in the off-season is that it is the off-season. Roads are less crowded. Campgrounds are near to empty. Off-season rates are usually in effect. But that also means that towns who typically thrive in summer are boarded up post-season. The attractions are closed, as are most restaurants and small shops. That is not a huge factor to us as we have had our fill of souvenir shops and theme parks. But when you are looking for good ice cream and all you can find is a Choco-Taco at the bottom of the freezer case at the gas station...

Halloween is now past, Thanksgiving is less than three weeks away, and the clocks will fall back this weekend. It is certainly Autumn around here. The leaves have turned mostly brown, but have not yet fallen. We had some heavy rain in Waterloo, NY, while Keith began exhibiting flu symptoms. Temperatures have dropped, but that did not stop us from visiting Niagara Falls, or from trampling through a corn maze for more than two hours. We also had the opportunity to visit the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. That was followed by a quick detour to Camp Tamarack, near Flint, Michigan, to visit Dee's nephew, Tal, who is working there as an instructor in the Outdoor Education Program. Then, a visit to St. Charles, IL, near Chicago, to visit with family members who moved there from Minnesota.

Finally turning southward, we travelled through Illinois and into Missouri, where we now are in Branson. We will be here for a couple of days, long enough to take a scenic rail excursion, and tonight we will see the Charlie Daniels Band. The weather has warmed up into the seventies, and the skies have cleared. Our adventures continue...
