Chasing That Horizon!

The Voyages and Journeys of Keith and D'Anne as they traverse the highways and waterways of America, the Pacific and Atlantic Coasts, the deserts, mountains, and the heartland, via boat, RV, plane, train, or cycle.

Vessel Make/Model: Itasca Horizon 36LD
Hailing Port: Chesapeake Bay
Crew: Keith and D'Anne Weitzman
About:
We have been boating for a little over 40 years. Our boats progressed from a 10 ft sailing dinghy to a Venture 17, American 25, Newport 30 MKIII, to a CT-41 Ketch - all sailboats. Searching for a little more speed and adrenaline,, we bought our first power boat, a 17ft runabout. [...]
Extra:
Our Backyard, a Carver 3607 trawler in Virginia, has been sold to a new adventurer. Dragon's Breath, our CHB-41 in Northern California, has also been sold to someone with wonderful dreams. Our Backyard carried us down the eastern rivers of America, on a voyage of incredible discovery. Alas, she [...]

Technology

Technology. It is the Force by which we base our lives. Our clocks are set by a radio signal coming from a master clock somewhere in Colorado, as it measures the half-life degradation of a tiny speck of uranium. Our cell phones receive a time signal from the internet, as well as the current and predicted [...]

Flat Earth

I received an awful lot of flak from fellow RV group members, when I posted a photo of our rig with the rear leveling jacks fully extended, our rear wheels two inches off the ground, as we sought to compensate for a very uneven slope that served as our last parking spot. You see, the parking brakes are [...]

My Kind of Morning

I barely know the difference between a crow and a chickadee, yet am enthralled by the morning calls of these creatures. It's early, and the sun is just peeking through the trees and fog, about to stake its claim on our little part of the world. After some periods of hard rain yesterday, it looks like [...]

Another Winter's Journey Has Begun

The sweet salty flavor of ranch dip, clinging precariously upon the end of a celery stick reminded one of adolescence. It was a reminder of days gone bye, a staple of parties and get-togethers, the ever-present accompaniment to chips, crackers, cubes of cheese, wine, and the noise of celebration. It [...]

A Break in the Weather

A mighty "Yeowww" followed by a flowing stream of epithets has shaken me out of my dreamy tedium as I am scraping hardened barnacles from the propeller. Looking up, I see my boatyard neighbor walking in circles rubbing his forehead, his dust mask and earmuffs hanging at an odd angle, and his ball cap [...]

The Carquinez Bridge looks different from this direction. We are accustomed to viewing it in the setting sun as the traffic rumbles below us in the distance. Now, it is to our East, framed, almost overshadowed by the confluence of Mare Island Strait, Carquinez Strait, and San Pablo Bay. At almost 300 feet above the shoreline, we are camped on an uninhabited portion of protected parkland. People did live here at one time, more than 60 years ago. They were administrators and caretakers who worked at the ammunition depot at Mare Island Naval Shipyard. First built in 1854, the shipyard closed in 1996. Now, on this southern tip of the island, is the Mare Island Shoreline Heritage Preserve, containing the oldest part of the naval base, ammunition bunkers, administrative buildings, homes, shops, railroad tracks, and the oldest Naval Cemetery on the West Coast. The residents were evicted long before the base closed, probably because it just wasn't safe to live so near to live ammunition. While the rest of the base and shipyard are being revitalized and converted to civilian use, this area has been set aside for hiking, tours, yurt and tent camping, and civic events. As for us, we volunteered our labor to remove downed trees and branches, mow tall grass and weeds, and provide some maintenance to tired yard equipment. In return, we have been allowed to drive our RV into the preserve and camp for the week. If you wish to learn more about Mare Island Shoreline Heritage Preserve, go to www.mareislandpreserve.org/

Two weeks ago, we spent ten days on the bluffs in Pacifica, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Our close proximity to San Francisco afforded us visits to the Conservatory of Flowers, Cable Car Museum, Sutro Baths, Golden Gate Park, Haight Ashbury, and many scenic drives around the city. To the South, we visited Devil's Slide, Half Moon Bay, Santa Cruz, Capitola, and points in between. Funny how we saw more of San Francisco in a few days than we did living here for 20 years.

Sutro Baths (pictured) provided an eerie experience. At Land's End, just below the Cliff House, the ruins of the Baths still remain at the water's edge. From the crumbling steps leading up the hill, to the tunnel in the cliff, the place spoke of past days when adventurous San Franciscans took the trolley to the coast to swim in the multiple indoor pools.

With another road trip to Reno coming up this weekend, we are watching the weather, as a Winter storm watch is in the works. Hopefully, we shall have an uneventful trip.
