Des Haies is a picturesque fishing village in the NW corner of mountainous Guadeloupe. Checked in at a souvenir shop that had a computer. Bless the French. They know how to keep check in low key. After spending time in St. Martin, St. Barths and Antigua, squeezed in among all of the megayachts it is nice to get away from all the big guys. No boats over 50 feet anywhere in sight. Yeah! While we were there we hiked up the hill to the Jardin Botanique de Dashain. The superb garden has it all - thousands of species of plants, 50 ft waterfall with rivers and ponds and a walk in aviary.
Also we are back in the land of French Patiserries, It is amazing the British can not make a pastry as good.
Today we drove around the island with our friends Pat and Eric from Cutter Loose. Stopped to hike in the National Park forest, a quick drive through Port a Pitre and then to the Sufreere Volcano. After driving up a very narrow road, sometimes having to back up to let cars going the other way thru, we made the parking lot below the volcano. We then did a fairly strenuous hike of about 3 miles up the hill to just below the summit. The sulphur spewing stink of the volcano made one wonder when it might blow. From "boat potato" to active exerciser makes for an excellent nights sleep even in a rolly harbor.
