Cruising among Saints

South of Guadeloupe proper are a collection of small islands called the Saint's. Part of Guadeloupe, they feel very different. Much more the French seaside resort town kind of place Small narrow streets, patisseries, small shops and friendly people. Cary met the owner of a dress shop that had emigrated from France with her husband after careers in IT. They had bought the shop as an investment and were now running it themselves.
We hiked up to Fort Napoleon and toured the fort and museum. Inside were large models of various ships from Columbus' Sante Maria to the ships that fought the battle of the Saints in the 1880's. This was a one of the largest navel battles in the western hemisphere as the British and French fleets lined up against each other over who would control the Caribbean Islands. Both fleets came at each other in a long line for the passing broadsides, but the wind shifted half way through and the British fleet cut through the middle of the French line. At that point all hell broke lose. The French claimed victory that day, but both sides we so badly damaged that neither could press the claims forward.
