Bora Bora to American Samoa Day 5
16 June 2011 | 760 Miles West of Bora Bora, Pacific Ocean
June 15, 2011 Wed Traveled last 24 hours: 174 miles Miles from Bora Bora: 760 Miles Remaining to American Samoa: 344 14 14 396S, 164 26 348W
It was sunny and warm, reaching 90 degrees by noon. The winds have remained under 10 knots. We put up the gennaker thinking we might get some assist from the wind but it only flapped about so we took it down. We are averaging 7.25 knots per hour with both engines on. The waves have been at the low end of the forecasted heights, around 6' with long periods in between. We have had no rain squalls in the past two days. It has been beautiful full moon sailing during the night with moonlight shimmering across the water providing a spotlight for us. We had planned this trip to coincide with the full moon and it has worked out nicely. This morning just as the moon went down, the sun popped up. We are now into a routine of Portia taking the 9pm to 11pm shift while Steve sleeps; Steve takes the 11pm to 3am shift while Portia sleeps; and then Portia takes the 3am to 7am shift while Steve sleeps. During the daylight hours, we both catch up on lost sleep while the other keeps a lookout. We both have lots of books on our Kindles and movies on small portable hard drives which we watch on the computer. Steve has been reading the Stieg Larsson, 3-book series starting with "The Girl who Played with Fire"; he is close to finishing the last one. Portia is reading the classic "Little Women" and has been enjoying the Planet Earth series on the computer. All is well on Dream Caper.
