Lake Worth, FL to Settlement Point (West End), Grand Bahama Island
22 December 2011
Finally, we’re heading back to the Bahamas! Anchors up at 7:30 am for our Gulf Stream crossing – wind has been SE for a couple of days and dropped off to 10-15. Inlet was confused with outgoing tide and the opposing SE wind. We were able to sail for the first half of the crossing, but wind dropped to 10-12 ESE and we were getting pushed too far north by the Gulf Stream, so we motor sailed the remaining half. Thankful for AIS (Automatic Identification System) – it is a great tool for identifying and avoiding other ship traffic – we can actually see their boat name, course and speed and they can see ours. Arrived at West End around 10:00 pm – it is never a good idea to enter an unknown port at night, so we opted for the anchorage just outside for a very rolly night (think washing machine!). In the middle of the night we moved from the stateroom bed to the main salon – much less movement for our tired bodies. Not a perfect passage, but nothing broke and all crew were accounted for – thank you Lord!
