Oaxaca
02 November 2016
The large, pre-Colombian archaeological site of Monte Alban is located 6 miles east of Oaxaca City on a low, mountainous range and is surrounded by several hundred artificial terraces and a dozen clusters of mounded architecture covering the entire ridgeline and surrounding area. Only a small percentage of the sites have been uncovered, with much left to explore in the future. During our day with our guide Fidel we also visited a monastery, and the black pottery and Alebrije (colorfully painted wood creatures) towns where local artisans create beautiful handicrafts. I was on the lookout for a purple mermaid Alebrije – none to be found!!
