Copper Canyon – Three Canyons/Creel
24 May 2018
This morning we took the tram ride over the canyon, then drove with our guide to Creel for an overnight stay. Creel is the center of tourism in the Sierra with hotels, Tarahumara handicrafts and good restaurants. The Tarahumara (The Tarahumara’s word for themselves is Raramuri – it means “runners on foot”) indians inhabit this area and are a group of indigenous people renowned for their long distance running ability (up to 200 miles in one session). Most still practice a traditional lifestyle, inhabiting natural shelters such as caves or cliff overhangs, as well as small cabins of wood or stone. They now make and sell handmade items, including cheese, as a source of income.
