Dingy Davits
09 March 2018 | Tarpon Springs
Sunny, cold nights
Today I spent the day over at our friend Herb's boat. For the last couple of days we have been installing a Dingy davit on his stern. Sound like a 4 hour job, but two days later, got it working. It is a fair bit of work drilling 12 six inch holes straight, to bolt brackets on his swim grid! With his electric winch installed, he is now a happy camper. The talk on the docks is that the unit was built in Canada, so had to be installed by a Canadian!
Susan has been taking time to explore the area and now knows her way around Tarpon Springs and Dunedin. This area is predominantly populated by Greeks from the islands around
Greece. In 1905 a local fisherman brought Greek divers in to harvest sponges from the Gulf. It became quite an industry, and the young divers brought moma, papa and their siblings over. To this day traditional sponge boats head out with divers to harvest the varying types lying on the ocean floor. They dive up to 100 feet to get rhe sponges, still using the old school copper helmets and canvas suits. You can not get the bottom time required using scuba gear.
It is still pretty chilly from sunset to sunrise. Tonight will be 14 C, 54 F.
