Mr. Murphy comes calling
07 June 2018 | Parc Bellerive, Saint-Ours, PQ
Cloudy, 65 degrees
Remember yesterday when I said how surprised I was to get berths in Montreal, and would believe it when I saw it. On our way early this morning I checked into the engine room, and saw a black streak of oil coming out of the rear of the transmission. That little gremlin "Murphy" had come calling. I would much rather have had my good friend Bill Murphy come for a visit!
I went into a marina that had a mechanics shop, but they were all too busy to look at it. Fortunately, I had a pretty good idea of the problem, and after a couple of hours of grunting and groaning managed to seperate the back end of the housing, and find that the coupler nut had loosened off. Cleaned up all the parts, new Locktite, and its together again. I am not adding oil until the morning to give the locktite time to set up. Fingers crossed.
The morning cruise was very serene, leaving at 0615 with a slight mist floating over the lake, fish jumping, and fishermen on the shore trying to catch them.
As we cruised down the river (going north, weird but true) many farms lined the bank Most are quite narrow, as back in the day, when the father died, and the boys inherited the farmland, it was always divided so that each portion had river access. Two or 3 generations, and there is not much riverfront left to divide. We only saw one unbroken farm with about 1 km of riverfront.
Well, hopefully tomorrow works out, and we can cruise the 50 miles to Montreal. We will have a 6 mile per hour current against us for around 8 miles, so it will be a chug for a while.
Picture today is of the last big Quebec farm.
