Touring the Grand Bahama Island

12 April 2022 | Gold Beach

It has been a few days since I have had time to sit down and Write! Dan, my brother and Michele flew to Nassau day before yesterday, and from lack of communication are having a busy and fun time in Nassau. They have plans to visit the Pirate museum, swim with the pigs, go scuba diving etc. We tried to get out diving here, but it has been too darn windy and wavy for the scuba boats to go out!
In the last week, we have rented a van, and travelled the length of Grand Bahama Island. At the western end is Old Bahama Bay. The Florida-based Ginn Company sought to develop a new tourism project in the area. In 2009, the now former Ginn Company defaulted on a $650 million loan used to fund Ginn Sur Mer. The company was planning a 5 billion dollar project but went bankrupt. Now there are a few homes and condo’s but overall pretty quiet up there!
We then headed to the Freeport harbour to see the cruise ships, and have lunch. Lunch was at Pier 1, overlooking the ocean. Below our patio table, we had Bull and Nurse sharks, as well as Tarpon swimming around, waiting for scraps. Easy clean up!
We then drove 40 miles to the Lucayan national Park. There is a path through the caves that the Lucayan Indians lived hundreds of years ago. There are also some cenotaes that were used as a fresh water source for the village. We then proceed to hike to a gorgeous 10 mile, white sand beach. We spent the afternoon swimming and snorkeling in the clear waters.
A great tour of the Island!
