The widest ship in the world!
Today we finally let go the lines and headed out to sea. We have two days of fairly calm seas, before all heck breaks loose again. By Wednesday, there will be 9 foot seas going to Florida. No way Jose!
After a month alongside, lots of little things to put away before heading out. Doors to latch, fridge locked, fans put away, and the list goes on. One missed item can cost you dearly.
An example of this is a small accident that happened underway. They shower door latch released and swung open. It then hit the hand held shower hose. The hose fell, hitting the hot water tap. Tap turns on, and we pumped about 80 gallons of water over the side! You can't make stuff like that up. I repeated the maneuver a dozen times at anchor to figure out that sequence. From now on, bungee the door, AND nozzle on shower floor. It is not a big deal, as we are on our way to Florida. Going to southern Bahamas this would be bad, and expensive, as water is hard to get, and we don't have a water maker.
The water was rough the first 1 1/2 hour, and then calmed down as we turned north west. Off Freeport harbour we saw an amazing sight. It was an amazingly wide ship. I could not figure out what is was for. The ship is called the Ramform Titan, and is the widest ship in the world! It is a seismic research ship. Here are some of it's statistics
Ramform TITAN
•Length 104.2 m
•Width at stern 70 m
•24 streamer reels - reel capacity 12 km
•Fuels capacity 6000 tons - 200,000 U S gallons!
•Tows several hundred thousand electronic sensors spread over a 12 km2 area
•The power station generates up to 18 Megawatts (3 x 6 MW)
•Bollard pull in acquisition mode 150 tons
•Top speed in transit 16 knots
•Crew capacity 80
•Recreation suite includes 225m2 ball court, fitness room, swimming pool, sauna, 3 TV lounges, auditorium
Over the years the Ramform fleet has smashed about every seismic production record. With each new class the bar is pushed higher and the Ramform Titan does not disappoint.
Thanks to the broad beam and ultra-stable hull construction PGS is able to equip the Ramform fleet with ever more seismic equipment. The result is greater production: more and more efficient seismic with ultra wide streamer tows, then better and better resolution data with high density (HD3D) seismic.
It is quite a machine! 18 megawatts would power up a small town.
Wonder if they are looking for a Master Electrical Technician?!
Tonight we are anchored at another abandoned subdivision, close to the wester end of Grand Bahama Island. Very protected, and actually quite pretty here. Tomorrow we shall leave at 0 dark 30 (430) to take advance of next to no winds in the early morning. All goes well and we shall be across the 65 miles by early afternoon.
I have posted a bunch of pictures on the photo galley for you viewing enjoyment!
