Snorkeling the Tetamanu pass

08 June 2008 | Tetamanu, Fakarava,Tuamotu

6/08/2008 Snorkeling in the Tetamanu pass (Fakarava, Tuamotus ,French Polynesia). After 6 hours of boisterous sail from Kauehi, we arrived to the south end of Fakarava. The pass is impressive with breakers on each side but it is pretty large and ok if you go through around slack tide. The anchorage is beautiful but our anchor got wrapped around a coral head at first, we managed to get it off and re-anchored, still pretty much in the middle of coral heads, there is not much sand patches (we checked with our mask) but this time we buoying our anchor for later retrieval, hopefully that will work otherwise we will have to dive for it, it is pretty deep . 6/9/2008- The next day, we decided to try snorkeling the pass at slack tide, it was about 2:30 but the sun was not shinning making for a lower visibility at first, but it was nevertheless beautiful. The yellow, white and pink corals, all the different small colorful fishes and the majestic king of the sea, Mr. Black Tip shark We saw sting rays, enormous parrot fishes, groupers, and many more fishes we had never seen before, it was so fantastic, we did it twice, and we can hardly wait to do it again tomorrow, the visibility should be even greater if the sun is fully there!!!!
