We weighed anchor at 430 am from Falmouth Harbour, Antigua for our passage to St Barts. It is 70 miles to Gustavia, the capital of St Barts. The boys were sound asleep as we started out, the forecast was for winds SE 18-20 knots and seas 6-8 ft swells out of the E. We are not sure what to expect once we are out from behind the lee of the island. The forecast is just that- a forecast and it does not always hold true..! We actually had a good sail for most of the day, it was a bit lumpy though. We were taking the 8 foot swell on our aft starboard quarter and this made for an up and down, forward and backwards, this way and that way kind of a ride-- sort of like riding an elephant! We did have plenty of wind so all sails were up and we were making a good 6 knots! As usual we had all four fishing lines out, two poles and two hand lines. We haven't caught a fish in quite a while... The wind starts to die down with about 20 miles left so we turn on the "iron jenny" aka engine and continue on our way. I really want to make it to the anchorage before sunset. Menno noticed the planar on the hand line had been tripped, we have something on the line... a nice fat tuna!! great! Then the other hand line catches its brother- we have "two in the box!" We are happy! So, the sun is starting to set on the horizon and St Barts is 5 miles away. Menno changes course inorder to steer through a flock of birds which are feeding on something in the water. No luck, nothing bites our lines. He asks me if it would be ok to turn around and go through the birds one more time,,,the sun is getting lower in the sky but I know he is desperate to catch something big. OK, turn around. The boys were below watching a movie but pop their heads up when we trun around. We go through the birds and nothing but then Daniel sees a green flash in the water and ZING out goes the line! A Mahi Mahi has hit the line and the game is on! It took us 40 minutes to land the 4 ft Mahi Mahi!! They are such smart fish and you really have to be carfeful because they are famous for being able to spit the hook out and get away! We have "Three in the Box" and drop the anchor in Gustavia just as the sun is setting! This has been a great sail day!
