Potluck on Piggy Beach
28 January 2006 | Staniel Cay, Central Bahamas
We are anchored off Big Majors Cay which has a beach with pigs on it! yes, pigs! They are wild pigs and there are about a dozen of them, they are skinny, pink pigs with little pink curly tails and they swim out to meet you when you come ashore in your dinghy! Everyone brings them their composte to eat and Daisy tries to herd them! She will run around them and they could care less, all very amusing to see pigs in the islands! There are 30 plus boats anchored off Piggy Beach. The wind has been "brisk" for the past couple of days and this is a secure anchorage for us to wait in for the blow to pass. This morning on the VHF an announcement was made that there will be a potluck on Piggy Beach at 3:00, everyone to bring a dish to share and their own beverage, plate and silverware. Great! The potluck is on the beach next to piggy beach. It is always fun to get to meet some of the many cruisers that we see on a regular basis. We have also met another friend for Daniel and John! His name is Anthony (12 yo) and is sailing on Camelot 2 with his Grandparents, they are Canadian. We baked chocolate chip cookies for the potluck then Daniel and I took a dinghy ride into town to pick up our laundry. I dropped it off yesterday at a ladys' house and she will wash and dry everything for $10 a load. Not a bad deal, my bags were very full and it has cost $8.00 in other places to do it yourself. She also baked 3 loaves of bread for us($3.50/loaf) and we bought some fresh vegetables and fruiit at the little store. A successful trip to town. Daniel brought his skateboard and was able to do some boarding, paved roads are far and few between so he has to take advantage of them when we see them! The dinghy dock at the marina has a nice school of nurse sharks hanging out there all of the time. There are usually six sharks just swimming around and 4 or 5 large rays. lovely!
Daniel, John, Daisy and I all went ot the potluck, Menno was not in a "social mood", said he has enough friends right now and doesn't need anymore! fine! He did use his time wisely and changed the oil and made some repairs on the watermaker. The boys counted 25 dinghys pulled up to the beach for the potluck. It always amazes me at the turnout of these potluck feasts. There is such a variety of great food- lasagna, chili, pasta dishes, curry potatoe pie, cabbage salads and desserts. We all tend to become very creative having to cook with the limited supply of ingredients on board. We do a good bit of recipe swapping. I just got a recipe for baking bread in a pressure cooker-great- it will take less time. Will try it out on our next baking day.
