Taking the road less traveled
15 February 2017
We have made the choice to take the road less traveled in some cases, in search of a little adventure, and in search of the Old Mexico -- less influenced by the gringos. When you take the road less traveled, you also get the road less maintained. I chuckle now, looking back on our trip. At the beginning of the trip Dave was swearing about the main Highway, Mex-1. In many areas Mex-1 is practically built on a berm with no shoulder. The lanes are very narrow, about 9.5 feet, which becomes very skinny when an RV and truck pass.
Now that we've been traveling on our own, without the caravan, we've taken some roads that we woudn't have even considered a few weeks ago. We have (carefully) crossed streams, gone on rocky roads, sand roads, and generally poorly maintained roads. Once we get where we are going, we breathe a sigh of relief (for no flat tires) and are thankful that we took the diversion. After taking these last few sidetrips, we got back on Mex-1 and Dave was so excited to be on a good road! (See how your perspective changes). These are some of the experiences that really enrich our trip.
