Ashore on Rathlin
31 July 2021 | Rathlin Island
Martin Crick | NW 10kts; overcast
For a small island, Rathlin has some considerable claims to fame. Aside from ferocious tides, it was where Robert the Bruce took refuge and had the famous encounter with the spider. It’s also where Marconi set up the first commercial wireless station, to advise Lloyds of London of safe arrival of trans-Atlantic ships. Today, it relies on tourism for which it has a remarkably frequent ferry service from N Ireland.
I went for a walk over the island, taking a loop with the East Lighthouse as my farther point - the roads are designated by which of the three lighthouses the serve! Despite the overcast weather, the views were superb. Recommended for a visit if ever you’re in the area.
COVID had put paid to food service in the bar, but their Guinness was still excellent.
