That dream... imagery of tropical ports, blue waters, white sands, sun rises, sun sets, the wind, the sea... a sense of tranquility and freedom... That dream was more like a fantasy for so long. Life, careers, and children dominated my world for decades but that dream was ever-present, a life goal, an aspiration. Several years ago I decided that it would be more than a dream or fantasy, I would make it my reality. I've always loved the water. I grew up on the coast of South Carolina and spent my youth on the water as much as possible. Many years and adventures later, my career had placed me in the Bay Area of California. An incredible sailing environment. It was there that I became determined to make my dream real, but I knew it was going to take hard work, commitment, and focus to make it happen. In 2011 I purchased Starkite, a venerable Catalina 30, in Berkeley. Starkite would be my training platform. Starkite was a well known boat in the Bay Area and brought with it a legacy of racing victories with it's former owner Laurie Miller, a master sailor and racer. Starkite served me well as I honed my skills in the challenging SF Bay environment. About a year ago, I decided I was ready to start looking for the vessel that would become my cruising vessel and water home. After many months of searching and looking at dozens of boats, I found one that clicked immediately with me. The past few weeks have been fueled by excitement and anticipation as I conducted surveys, sea trials, and crawled thru every inch of her. Today I am ecstatic. I have completed the process and now am the proud owner of Epiphany, a 2003 Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 45.2. I took delivery late yesterday. She will splash later this week after fresh bottom paint is applied and will move to a slip at California Yacht Club for a few weeks while I prepare to head out...
