Raurimu Spiral

We left Taumarunui with no clear idea where we were going to stay, so had to stick with fairly basic ingredients as we did not know what cooking facilities would be available. Although we were going along the Forgotten Highway we did a small detour to see the Raurimu Spiral which is a remarkable engineering feat which enables trains to make the steep descent to Taumarunui. It consists of bridges and tunnels looping over and under each other to reduce the gradient and allow ordinary trains to make the descent. We went to the viewing point but the bush had grown to obscure the view so it was rather disappointing. The photo shows a model of the spiral at the viewing point
