The site of the worlds first oil well is found in Whangamona. According to legend Mr Ewan McGregor set up a derek and drilled a 700ft deep hole. There were signs of an oil strike when his son dropped a spanner down the hole. The saying ' A spanner in the works' originated from this incident. AS the spanner could not be retrieved another hole was drilled, this time to 1200ft and gas was struck but prospecting ended when McGregors other son fell down the hole.
