Port Charles and Sandy Bay

This part of Coromandel is even more rugged, with many beautiful beaches and roads lined with pohutukawa trees. We had a false start and ended up in a dead end at a rather tatty camp site on a beach. We retraced our steps and found the right route. The road is sealed to just beyond Colville. This town was once known as Cabbage Bay. Captain Cook gave it the name when he made his crew eat cabbage tree leaves to guard against scurvy. Cabbage tree leaves don't feature on any respectable gourmet menu today which is lucky as they do not look much like cabbage and I should imagine are rather indigestible. The road from this point was very bad and slow going. We had originally intended to do part of the Coastal Walkway which starts at Stony Bay. It is supposed to be a spectacular walk with lovely views and wild terrain. We decided on an easier activity and did some more gentle walking along beautiful beaches and passed many birds and a sunbathing seal. We returned by a different but equally poor road
