Gale force winds that just won't let up!
22 March 2007 | Thompson Bay, Long Island
Jim Lea
Well, we have really settled into life on Long Island, and had better enjoy it, because we will be here for a while yet. When we sailed down here from the marina on Sunday, we knew the forecast was for strong winds, and that Thompson Bay would be a good spot for protection, but we didn't realize for how long. We have been here now four days, and it may be a bit longer. But it's given us time to re-provision, and "lime" a bit with the other boaters here who are also waiting out the weather, and to do some preventative maintenance. On Monday, we made a few trips to the store for food, and checked out the fuel dock, as we should fill up sometime, weather permitting. But it turns out the pumps are not working, but "will be fixed soon", meaning who knows? On Tuesday, I did a few engine jobs, new anodes, checked the raw water impeller (good as new) the oil level, water level, etc, and all good. I thought the engine exhaust had a different sound to it when we returned from skiing, and went over it completely seeing no problems (it was all replaced last winter),so it must be my imagination. Then we took the dinghy down to the "other" store, where we bought a few items. We got a great pineapple there, not available at the "upper" store, and at the upper store got a papaya that the other store doesn't have. Exhausting work! Yesterday (Wednesday) I hitch-hiked down a few miles for a hair cut, then we headed south to Max's conch bar for lunch, stopping at Sammy's liquor store for wine on the way back, and then back to the boat just in time to "lime" (gab) with three other Bristol owners anchored here. They are all from the Annapolis area, and, while not sailing together, seem to know each other. So I had a good time checking out a few modifications that I am interested in, and some ideas that I definitely will not use! Then back to the boat for Chicken in a pesto cream sauce with a salad on the side. This morning I listened to the weather forecast and it is still not encouraging. We want to head north to Cat Island, but with the wind north-east at 20-25 knots and 8'-12' seas, we have decided to wait. Also there are squalls in the area with one coming through our anchorage last night. A few miles away one went through last night with winds of 60 knots, so we will also wait for them to clear up. All in all, we will be here for a few more days. But I can use it to try some fishing that I learned about from one of our drives yesterday. So for today and probably tomorrow, liming and fishing is about it. Ooops, forgot! The mail boat comes in today with fresh food, so maybe some more shopping. Phew, what a schedule!
