To the Abacos
06 May 2014 | West End, Grand Bahama
Calm and clear
Up anchor at 2:43 in Lake Sylvia. Out the Port Everglades channel at Ft Lauderdale at 3:30. Into the dark and rolling Atlantic. There was no wind in Lake Sylvia but when we got to sea, there was a nice 5-7 knot breeze out of the ESE. Put the jib out and we were doing 6.2 knots. Going to be a short trip.
An hour later the wind was lighter and right on the nose. Around noon it picked up to 5-10 knots and stayed right on the nose. There were just 1 to 2 foot waves and some bigger rollers that did just that. Serenity butted through the little ones and rolled over the left over NE rollers. The last two hours there was no wind or waves, just little ripples.
Very little large ship traffic during the night and only one during the day. We made the best time ever and got in at 3:45 pm. Early enough to go through customs, get fuel, do a load of laundry and have a well deserved drink. The cost of the slip at the marina is high but it does allow a good night’s rest after a long night and day. The place is full of multi-million dollar yachts and a few sailboats. Serenity is the smallest and oldest. But she dun good.
Tomorrow is off to Mangrove Cay and then to Great Sale Cay. It will be three or four days with no wifi or cell phone coverage. So don’t expect to hear from me until the 9th or 10th. I’ll call Karen by cell when we get to the Foxtown cell tower.
