Land Ho!!

08 September 2014 | 18 07.3'S:178 25.1'E, quarantine anchorage Suva Fiji
overcast and cool
Safely anchored in Savu's quarantine anchorage. Savu is the capital of Fiji located on the island of Viti Levu. While the population of French Polynesia was 214,000 and all of Tonga was 112,000 (as of 2005), the population of Fiji is 893,000. Suva looks like a large city. The Royal Suva Yacht Club has arranged for our customs check-in later this afternoon, so we're anchored in the quarantine anchorage along with three or four other boats waiting for customs to come out to the boats.

The wind dropped off and went directly behind us late last night and we ended up motor-sailing the rest of the way into the harbor. The island is quite large and there are several mountain ranges. It's quite overcast and according to the forecasts it's supposed to be quite windy overnight and tomorrow. We've gained/lost another hour and are now nineteen hours ahead of the west coast of the US and sixteen hours ahead of the east coast.

Saw a couple of sailboats in the last twenty-four hours and a few birds. Looks like there's time for a shower and a nap before we're allowed off the boat.

As of today, it's around 1500 miles to Brisbane as the crow flies. We have two more stops left. Here are the updated statistics: 8600 miles, eleven countries, twenty-one islands, two oceans, one canal, eleven time zones, one date line, 54 books, 12 audiobooks, and 84 dives.

Extra:
The boat's name comes from a poem by Robinson Jeffers: Evening Ebb The ocean has not been so quiet for a long while; five nightherons Fly shorelong voiceless in the hush of the air Over the calm of an ebb that almost mirrors their wings. The sun has gone down, and the water has gone [...]
