13 September 2014 | suva anchorage
sunny with a few clouds
Our neighbor in the anchorage. At high tide you can see the pole and a few inches of the hull -- six feet or so of the hull is exposed at low tide.
In the taxi yesterday on the way to Pacific Harbour, I realized that it was January when I last saw flat land. In from the coast, the land was flat with large hills or "mountains" in the distance. All the islands we've visited have either been extremely vertical, small ringing motus or islands, or hilly and rocky with thick vegetation. This island is very large with significant areas that have been cleared for agriculture. There are large rivers that flood and many small villages outside the large cities. There were even radar traps along the main road. All the trappings of civilization and very different from the rest of the islands we've visited. Everyone has been friendly and helpful.
Quiet day with not much planned. Just put a pencil to the next passage. Today's plan is to leave Wednesday (election day) mid-day which should put us into Vanuatu on Monday the 22nd. It looks like the Oklahoma Tennessee game might be broadcast this afternoon -- not sure I can get internet at the yacht club so I might be spared updates on the ASU CU game. Tuna fajitas for dinner last night.
