A shot of the rental car. Fortunately the rental agent didn't say anything about having to wear floppy shoes or big glasses even though the car looks a bit like the clown cars in the circus. Speaking of circuses, there was a circus camp or training facility in an old warehouse near the docks in Fremantle. Looking in the door you could see mats, several trapeze, and assorted paraphernalia for all kinds of circus acts.
The rental agent did ask if driving a stick was a problem and I said no without realizing that it meant shifting with my left hand since you sit on the right. It's starting to feel natural but it's taken awhile. I still walk up to the wrong door when I approach the car. It's been hard to remember to get in on the right side. The cab drivers in Grenada laughed at me when I'd walk to the wrong side and ask if I wanted to drive.
It's been fun getting out of the city. Busselton has a huge jetty (longest in the southern hemisphere).
I'm staying in a beach resort. It's a bit worn and tired, but quiet and fairly clean. The concept of having your own shower that you can let run as long as you want has been one of the highlights of life on land. There have been days that I've taken two showers just because I can.
Went driving yesterday and toured the Cape Naturaliste light house. We saw several whales from the observation deck.
Just down the western coast watched surfers in waves like this. At one point there were three or four surfers waiting for a wave and when I looked closer there were at least four dolphins playing in the same wave. Several launched themselves from the backside of the wave and then the group swam off. There are sharks around here so I'm sure the surfers were well aware of who owned the fins.
Further down the coast I spent a half hour or so watching the water surge through what they called canals in the rocks and through a pool. The reversing surge and current was quite impressive and the visibility was good and you could watch the kelp waving back and forth.
Lots of woods, scrub, and finally farmland as I drove further south through the vineyards of the Margaret River. There were sheep, deer, cows, but I didn't see any live kangaroos, only a couple of dead kangaroos on the side of the road.
Heading for Cape Leeuwin today where I'll finally get a glimpse of the Southern Ocean. It's been pretty spectacular seeing the Indian Ocean.
Here's a sculpture from Perth next to the Art Museum. Not sure if it's a call for dinner or a scream for help:
And this child was on the Busselton Jetty:
