blue skies with high clouds
It's a pretty Sunday morning, Mother's Day, in the North Atlantic. Finally we've got some productive wind and are flying both the main and the jib making pretty good time this morning. Of course that means that the seas are a bit lumpier with about a meter to a meter and half swell, and it's always fun getting used to the noises that a boat makes when it's working. This boat likes to pound a bit in the waves, so there are fairly loud thumps and bangs as the waves hit under the salon and on the inside of the hulls. The motion is quite different from a monohull. You can even leave a drink on a table and it will still be there ten minutes later. The boat still moves but it's a flatter ride. There's a fair bit of shipping in this stretch of water. Three ships crossed our path in the last hour. One was a huge private yacht and you could see their helicopter on the aft upper deck as they crossed less than a mile in front of us.

Completed maintenance chores before we left St George's Bermuda around noon yesterday. Serviced the engines, checked all the reef lines and attachments on the main, and serviced the generator. Blue skies with just some high patchy clouds this morning. Glad we didn't have a blind date with Ana (tropical storm Ana that is) -- there are some people you just don't need to meet.

The three boys took the bus into Hamilton Friday night. Debbie wanted some time to herself. It's about a half hour bus ride from St George's to Hamilton and the buses are clean well kept and quiet -- no music on the bus which is very different from the buses in Grenada where the music is always loud. Bermuda is clean, organized, and built up. The roads are nice and the houses all in good repair. There's obviously more money here than there is on most Caribbean islands. The cook was off for the meals in Bermuda. Last night we had gluten free pizzas with artichoke, pineapple, chunk smoked salmon, capers, and provolone cheese.

Hope it's a great day wherever you are.

The boat's name comes from a poem by Robinson Jeffers: Evening Ebb The ocean has not been so quiet for a long while; five nightherons Fly shorelong voiceless in the hush of the air Over the calm of an ebb that almost mirrors their wings. The sun has gone down, and the water has gone [...]
