The Maldivian Archipelago covers 90,000 square kilometers but its total land mass is only 298 square kilometres (115 square miles). This makes the Maldives the most geographically dispersed country in the world.
Out of 1192 islands only 192 are inhabited.
The country's population is just over 300,000 (plus a transient workforce of approximately 100,000). One third of the population lives in the capital city of Malé, which is a tiny Island city that's only 5.8 square kilometers in diameter (2.2 miles). Because of its diminutive size, Malé has one of the highest population densities of any city in the world. Our first visit Malé was unforgettable.
