A place to stay
03 December 2017 | Puerto Madero, Mexico
When we hauled out at the end of March we stayed at Hotel Playa Linda whilst preparing the hull for antifouling. Close to the beach and about 3 miles from the marina, it provided us with comfortable accommodation although the pool did turn Stuart's hair green! Whilst we would have been happy to stay there again, we thought a change was in order so did the usual trawl through Booking.com and AirBnB. In the end we settled for 2 nights of relative luxury at the Holiday Inn in Tapachula to ease us into Mexican life as well as provision the boat at the adjoining Walmart shopping centre. It worked perfectly and we enjoyed the pool as well as the fantastic breakfasts that kept us going until suppertime.
We then planned to stay at a Cabaña close to the beach at Playa Linda but whist set in attractive gardens with a pleasant pool, the wooden cabin proved too remote and rustic even for us. We cut our stay short and sought the advice of our boat yard neighbours for somewhere to suitable to stay while we worked on the boat in the boatyard.
In the end we found that the Hotel Sport in Puerto Madero, otherwise known as 'The Yacht Club', suited us very well. This is certainly not a 5 star hotel but at around £13 a night it did not strain the cruising kitty too much. We soon became good customers of the resin shop for fibre glassing materials, the Carpentero for timber and the OXXO for a cooling after work Corona, saving us the long combi trip into Tapachula for supplies.
The only non Mexicans in this hot and dusty town are cruisers from the boat yard, currently made up of Americans, Swedish, New Zealanders, Germans and of course us Brits. This is 100% Mexico, nothing added - nothing taken away.
