Catch of the day

What a day.

Did you ever have one of those days that you think you will never forget. That might have been today for us.

Today I became a legal fisherman in Florida. Only cost me $47. Hell, I paid $45 in Michigan and caught three 4" perch.

Today was different.

After paying for my fishing license at the Florida Tax Collectors office, I stopped at a tackle/bait shop close to the marina. I paid for a dozen live shrimp about 1" long and headed back to the boat.

I pulled the fishing rod from Michigan out of storage and mounted the reel. About 15 minutes later I was at the end of one of the docks here in Harbour Cay Club with 2 other fisherman and I was dropping my line in the water.

Less than 30 seconds later I had the first Mangrove Snapper of the day, about 8" long, but plenty to fillet.

Less than an hour later I had the days limit and my fellow fisherman contributed their catch to mine and I had a nice collection of Snapper to fillet for dinner. (See the gallery photos.)

The sailing gourmet (my dear wife) prepped them and cooked with a light pan fry. They were delicious; light and tender white meat.

We only ate half the catch so a different recipe is on order for tomorrow.

After catching the fish, but before cleaning them, we had a visitor to Far Niente.

A large Manatee that swam into the harbor today around 4 pm. We lured him over to the dock with fresh water from the hose that he consumed with great pleasure.

This guy/gal looked good except for a big chunk out of the tail that looked like it was from a power boat prop.

Amazing creatures.

And what a day!

A couple photos taken by Tom Jones (original owner of Far Niente when it was Christiana) Tom was on a fall delivery on a Grand Banks Eastbay 38 from the Great Lakes to Annapolis. On a very windy, cool early Sunday morning 50 miles north of Annapolis, they were motoring south on the Chesapeake at 23 kts and just happened to spot us exiting the Sassafras River headed for Annapolis for the sailboat show. What are the odds? A chance but great encounter none the less.
