January 15, 2014

OK, remember when I was touting the ease in getting great veggies way down here from Fresh Market? Well...things don't always go as planned in the out islands. We placed our order just like before. We were excited to be getting some fresh veggies, Doritos, peppers, thick sliced bacon, etc. So...the Captain C (mailboat) arrived in the afternoon last Friday. I confirmed that the store filled our order. There was a big beach party scheduled for 5:30 which was a little late, but we wanted a neat bonfire. So Bill and I ventured in to town to get our "stuff" from the Captain C.

That's the dinghy's shadow in 15 ft. of water!

The whole mailboat process is organized confusion. Boxes are brought to the center of "town" and then they are moved from there by the recipient of the box. After quite a few of the cooler boxes had been delivered, I became a little nervous...could our box be missing? After the boat said all the cooler boxes had been unloaded and ours wasn't there, I assumed we had a problem. The boat said our box wasn't on the manifest - it didn't get loaded in Nassau. I called my contact at the store, he did some research and called me back - "Your box is on the mailboat KCT". I mentioned this to the mailboat Capt. and he gave a big laugh and told me that mailboat goes to Crooked/Acklins...that's 100 miles NE of here.

I then called the store back and told them the box got on the wrong boat and wouldn't get here. My contact was a little surprised that the KCT wouldn't deliver it to us since the box had Ragged Island as the destination. He was shocked when I told him how far away it was from us. Evidently geography isn't a required subject here.

So now we are awaiting a new shipment from the store this Friday. They credited our order, and apologized heavily. It makes the mailboat day more exciting...it's now an adventure. I hope they find the right boat.

In the meantime, there's always fish, conch, and lobster to occupy our time. Along with wallows, beach walks, and the various parties and socializing that needs to be done.

We love Hogfish!

Sharks like Hogfish too

I'll let you know how we make out on mailboat day.
