The dreaded Wilkerson Bridge
24 October 2015 | Entrance to the Punga River
Clear sky's wind 3-20 from the North
It's October 23, only 11 days to Halloween, my favorite holiday. We left Coinjock this morning at 9:00 headed to the start of the Punga River. The wind was calm in the morning then picked up to 15-20 knots in the afternoon. We roared down the Alligator river with our jib up (8 knots SOG). We made the turn to the Alligator/ Punga canal and headed south to the dreaded Wilkerson Bridge. It is only 64 feet high and our mast is 62 feet high, so if the hide is high we can damage our VHF antenna that extend about 3 feet above the mast. The canal trip was nice (see picture). We approached the Wilkerson Bridge with caution. The level gage said 65 feet so the water was lower. We made it through the Bridge with just the top of the antenna touching the Bridge (Yahoooo...) We made though the lowest bridge on the intercostal. Once we made it through the canal we anchored with a group of other boats at the entrance to the Punga. I like that work Punga it sounds very tropical. We had a nice dinner at anchor and I watched the new Jurassic Park movie which I highly recommend. I wish I had a group of trained raptors....... Live long and proposer.........
